Improving future ecosystem benefits through earth observations

Improving future ecosystem benefits through Earth observations In the last decades, pollution, land use change, the introduction of alien species and climate change have caused serious threats to ecosystems’ integrity, bringing them sometimes on the edge of collapse and decreasing the quality of ecosystem services.

To counter this trend, we must develop management strategies based on our knowledge of ecosystems'changes and the pressures that cause them, using all available data and creating predictive models representing the complex interactions that connect living organisms and the environment, both on a local and continental scale.

The European H2020 project “Ecopotential: Improving future ecosystem benefits through Earth observations”, aims at optimizing the use of last-generation remote sensing observations (in particular, the data provided by ESA’s Sentinel satellites) and field monitoring data to track the state of terrestrial and marine ecosystems and develop new predictive models combining information provided by satellites in a highly interdisciplinary way.
