Sun-induced fluorescence for drought early warning in crops
Project in brief
SCOOP will combine experimental investigations involving a comprehensive set of measurements (physiological, biophysical, biochemical plant parameters and proximal sensing data) with process-based modelling for assessment of plant responses to evolving soil water stress. In addition, the project aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the recent mechanistic light response model and use SIF to derive photosynthesis of the above-mentioned species exposed to stress conditions.
Project objectives
-
Does SIF provide an added value for early detection of water stress compared to traditional reflectance and temperature-based RS methods?
- What is the temporal sensitivity of the above-mentioned RS proxies to evolving soil water limitations?
- What are the main factors (and what is their relative contribution) influencing TOC SIF and SIF-photosynthesis relationship under unstressed and water stressed conditions?
- Can the Photochemical Reflectance Index (PRI; [30]) or its modifications be considered a reliable RS proxy of NPQ?
Impact
The project will define cutting-edge approaches to evaluate early water stress events in crop plants
